Boosting AOV with Smart, Seamless Purchase Incentives

To boost Average Order Value for an e-commerce brand, I designed and tested a progressive discount model based on cart value milestones. Instead of offering a flat 40% discount upfront, we incentivised higher spending through tiered thresholds, encouraging customers to unlock bigger savings as they added more to their cart. A controlled A/B test showed the milestone-based experience increased AOV by 8%, outperforming the flat discount offer.

Each group responds differently to incentives. Understanding their behaviours helped us identify gaps in how our offers were presented and, more importantly, where we were leaving Average Order Value (AOV) growth on the table.

The business offered a straightforward 40% discount upfront to all customers, no matter how much they purchased. While attractive, it didn’t encourage higher spending. Customers would buy just enough to get the discount, leaving AOV growth untapped.

Hypothesis

Instead of giving away the full 40% upfront, break the discount into cart value milestones.
This could:

  • Create a sense of progress (“Only ₹X away from the next discount tier!”)

  • Encourage customers to keep adding items to unlock the next tier

  • Increase order totals while still capping maximum discount

Insight gained:

Flat discounts made customers stop buying earlier. Progressive spend goals could keep them adding more to their cart as long as the next target felt achievable.

The idea was simple: make the discount feel earned, not given.

We replaced the flat discount with a progressive, spend-based milestone model:

  • Milestone 1: Spend ₹A → 20% off

  • Milestone 2: Spend ₹B → 30% off

  • Milestone 3: Spend ₹C+ → 40% off (max to protect margins)

This created a clear, visible path for customers to “level up” their savings while increasing AOV.

If customers couldn’t see their progress, they wouldn’t chase the next milestone.

We designed:

  • A dynamic progress bar in PLP, PDP & Cart.

  • Smart, real-time copy: “Add ₹XX more to get 30% off!”

  • Mobile-first layout where milestones were always visible without scrolling.

Every element turned the offer from a static coupon into a mini game.

"Ideas are only as good as the data that proves them."

We ran an A/B test:

  • Group A: Flat 40% discount upfront.

  • Group B: Progressive, spend-based milestones.

We tracked AOV, milestone achievement rates, and total revenue. Early on, Group B users consistently added more items to reach the next tier, confirming the model worked.
